Strengthening Global Collaboration in Mexico City

From March 25th to the 27th, the Aspen Institute International Committee convened in Mexico City, hosted by Aspen Mexico and its Executive Director, Enrique Berruga, who also served as Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to the United Nations. Berruga, a prolific author with six novels to his name, and Chair, Luis Gerardo Del Valle welcomed us, marking a significant milestone - the 10th anniversary of Aspen Mexico.

Under the leadership of Berruga, Aspen Mexico has had a transformative impact on the country. One of the standout initiatives, Project Play, has successfully motivated children aged 5 to 12 across the nation to embrace physical activity. Additional programs have also made notable strides, including those focused on the future of education, the evolving identity of Mexicans through the Aspen Dialogue, justice system reforms, and efforts to build bridges in an increasingly polarised society.

Our CEO, Christine Maiden Sharp commented on the spirit of our gathering:

“The Aspen Institute International partners form a vibrant and thriving community. We share insights and forge plans to work together across borders.”

Over three days, representatives from various countries discussed pressing issues back home, exchanged their innovative work, and gleaned lessons from one another. Key topics included fostering trust amidst societal fragmentation, leveraging external partnerships, and enhancing our global impact through strategic media relations.

A poignant moment came when our partners from Aspen Kyiv shared their resilience in the face of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Despite the harrowing daily challenges—missile attacks, disruptions to children's education, and widespread mobilisation - they remain steadfast, continuing their vital work. Their courage is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and it underscores the importance of our collective support.

We also heard from other partners about new initiatives, such as the Democracy Workshop and the eagerly anticipated NATO Summit for Youth. From New Zealand, we introduced our new course on Evidence and Values Based Decision Making, created by Neil Jacobstein, an immersive course for enhancing decision making skills using validated evidence and stakeholder values.

Thank you, Aspen Mexico for your generous hospitality and contagious spirit!
