the world is faced with incredible challenges.

In 1949, the American industrialist and philanthropist Walter Paepcke realised that the world was entering an era of tremendous uncertainty and upheaval.

His idea was to bring a diverse group of forward-thinking people together and give them the freedom to engage with each other.

And that’s how the Aspen Institute began.

The people of New Zealand have inspired us all by showing resilience and a commitment to democratic values. No matter its size, New Zealand is now in a world leadership role. We believe that now is the time for the Aspen Institute New Zealand. Secretary Albright

We focus on practical issues that are important to New Zealand such as economic opportunities, food production, energy resilience, intergenerational equity, climate change, artificial intelligence, biodiversity, technological advancements, international trade and more.

Here and throughout the country, we hold seminars, forums and events designed to promote understanding.

Individual participation and truly diverse views are vital to an impartial approach that pushes no political agenda.

Participants get to the nub of the issue and go deeper.

Our donors participate in our programme and make our programme possible.

Te Kākano is our globally linked local community of Aspen Institute New Zealand supporters.

Members are the Aspen Institute’s closest friends and philanthropic partners helping advance the Institute’s mission of values-based leadership and dialogue on the issues critical to our country and world today.

Inspired by the Aspen tree, our supporter programme levels are named after New Zealand’s native trees, which evoke growth springing from the original act of generosity…

…the seed, Te Kākano
